Fires in Gironde contained but high-risk day expected Wednesday

The Gironde prefecture reported Tuesday evening that several fire foci remained active but contained in the department. Authorities warned of unfavorable weather conditions for the next day, with winds up to 40 km/h. The burned area is estimated at 42,000 hectares.

The prefecture stated in the evening that the fire remained active but contained at the Souge camp, Grand Crohot and Lanton. A new fire start was reported in the commune of Temple, where Mayor Olivier Halard said homes were not in danger.

Some 60,000 residents of the communes of Haillan, Mérignac and Eysines were allowed to return home, provided they remain ready to evacuate if necessary. Prefect Sophie Brocas reported 14 fire restarts during the day while maintaining that the blaze was stabilized.

Météo-France forecasts a strong heat peak on Wednesday, with highs between 38 and 41°C inland. Lieutenant-Colonel Eric Pitault of SDIS 33 said the day would be important and great attention would be paid to the extreme temperatures.
