Gene Shalit, the film critic known for his puns and walrus mustache on NBC's Today Show, has died at age 100. His family said he passed away peacefully on Friday after a long career reviewing movies and books.
Shalit appeared on Today from 1970 until his retirement in 2010. He became a regular contributor in 1973 and reviewed thousands of films in segments often noted for their lighthearted tone.
His family told NBC News that Shalit “passed away peacefully today after 100 years of an amazing life.” He turned 100 on March 25, 2026, and received birthday wishes on the program from Al Roker.
Born in New York City in 1926, Shalit also wrote for magazines including Look and Ladies’ Home Journal. He is survived by a son and a daughter.
