Toronto Blue Jays leadoff hitter George Springer completed an inside-the-park run in the first inning Monday night after New York Mets outfielders mishandled a routine fly ball. The play at Rogers Centre was scored a triple plus an error.
Springer sent a ball toward left field that appeared catchable. Juan Soto approached but pulled up and missed the catch. Center fielder A.J. Ewing then bobbled the ball while trying to retrieve it.
Springer ran aggressively from the start and continued around the bases without stopping. He scored standing up after the defensive miscues.
The official scoring credited Springer with a triple and charged an error to Ewing. The hit would mark Springer’s 66th career leadoff home run if later ruled a homer, placing him behind Rickey Henderson’s 81.
