Google seeks to build large data center in Torsboda

Google has expressed interest in purchasing an industrial plot in Torsboda for 911 million kronor. The facility could become one of the largest in Europe but raises concerns about higher electricity prices.

The American tech giant Google wants to establish a data center in Timrå municipality. The project is estimated to require 1,000 megawatts of power, which could rise to 2,000 megawatts. A decision on the purchase is expected in the autumn from Sundsvall and Timrå municipalities.

Low electricity prices in northern Sweden attract the company. The municipalities state that the establishment could create about 500 jobs. Torsboda Industrial Park has agreements requiring Google to contribute its own energy production.

Daniel Gustafsson at Svenska kraftnät warns that the facility could affect electricity prices if no new production is added. Energy Minister Ebba Busch refers to a government assignment to secure electricity for energy-intensive companies without price increases.
