Google breaks ground on datacenter in Horndal

Google has broken ground on its first Swedish datacenter in Horndal outside Avesta. The company promises thousands of jobs during construction and 100 permanent positions when the facility is ready in 2028.

On Tuesday morning, municipal councillor Blerta Krenzi (S) turned the first sod together with Google representatives. The establishment marks the start of a new chapter for Avesta, according to Krenzi.

Google simultaneously announced a fund of 54 million kronor to be distributed with the municipality to local projects in sustainability and growth. Sara Överby, head of public policy at Google Sweden, stressed that construction work creates jobs for electricians, technicians and catering staff.

Groundwork began in November 2025 after Google bought 109 hectares of land in 2017. The datacenter will be air-cooled and waste heat can be used for district heating. Aid and foreign trade minister Benjamin Dousa (M) highlighted that the investment creates many jobs and subcontractor opportunities.
