Government approves wind farm outside Grebbestad

Fishermen criticize the decision on the offshore wind farm Vidar. The government approved the park on Thursday despite objections from professional fishermen.

The government approved the planned Vidar wind farm four miles off Grebbestad in northern Bohuslän on Thursday. The decision has drawn strong criticism from local fishermen who believe the facility will destroy important fishing grounds.

Charles Ohlsson, a shrimp and crayfish fisherman, calls the decision madness. He argues that the park removes one of the best production areas for shellfish and fish.

The County Administrative Board in Västra Götaland has assessed that the benefits of wind power outweigh the impact on fishing. Department head Monique Wannding points to the need for electrification in industry. The government has decided on measures to compensate the fishing industry.

Vattenfall welcomes the decision but notes that conditions for investments in offshore wind power are currently lacking.
