Hong Kong CityU president Freddy Boey resigns two years early

Freddy Boey, a Singaporean academic and president of City University of Hong Kong (CityU), has resigned for personal reasons two years ahead of his contract's end. The university's council executive committee appointed Provost and Deputy President Professor Lee Chun-sing as acting president with immediate effect to ensure stability. A global recruitment for the next president will launch shortly.

Freddy Boey Yin Chiang, president of City University of Hong Kong (CityU), resigned on April 24, 2026, for personal reasons. The Singaporean biomaterials engineering expert became the university's fifth president in May 2023, with a five-year contract set to run until 2028. The university expressed gratitude for his contributions over three years.

The executive committee of the university's council stated: “The executive committee of the [university’s] council has appointed provost and deputy president Professor Lee Chun-sing as acting president with immediate effect to ensure continued operation. The council will provide full support to ensure stability during the transition.” A global recruitment exercise for the next president will launch shortly.

A council source confirmed Boey's contract was due to end in 2028, making the resignation two years early. His predecessor was Professor Way Kuo.
