Hong Kong wild boar population halves under capture-and-kill policy

A Legislative Council study published on Monday showed that Hong Kong's wild boar population has more than halved since authorities adopted a capture-and-kill policy in 2021.

The study found that the city's estimated wild boar population stood at 2,000 in 2021 but fell to 990 last year. The number of boars culled rose elevenfold to 723 in 2025, while injuries from attacks dropped by 80 per cent.

Authorities announced the regular capture-and-kill operations using tranquilliser guns in November 2021. The shift followed a high-profile incident in Tin Hau, where an auxiliary police officer was knocked down and bitten.

The government spent HK$105.6 million over the four-year period. The Agricultural, Fisheries and Conservation Department carried out the monthly operations.
