LRF Värmland seeks sharp reduction in wild boar numbers using drones

LRF Värmland wants a national target to cut wild boar numbers and allow tools such as drones and traps during hunts. The proposal follows a recent call by the Social Democrats to reduce the population.

Regional chairman Erik Forsberg says wild boars cause repeated crop damage in Värmland. At Frykåsen outside Kil the animals have destroyed wheat and pea sowing across two to three hectares. Forsberg wants to ban feeding, introduce traps for larger animals and use drones to locate the boars. He notes that the problems affect farmers even if some areas suffer more. The Nature Conservation Association in Värmland agrees that wild boar numbers need to fall to protect agriculture. Chair Ann-Charlotte Karlsson highlights the importance of sustainable food production for both emergency preparedness and the environment. The size of the population in Sweden remains unclear. The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency is developing a new method to estimate the number of animals.
