Court upholds logging ban for Hyttsten family

The Land and Environment Court of Appeal has upheld the Swedish Forest Agency's decision to ban logging on the Hyttsten family's land in Konäs, Åre municipality, due to risks to the three-toed woodpecker.

The court confirmed that the planned logging would have such a negative impact on the three-toed woodpecker population in Jämtland county that a ban under the Species Protection Ordinance was justified. The species is protected and occurs in the area.

Swedish Forest Agency district chief Helena Eriksson commented on the decision: It can feel tough.

The ruling follows prior assessments by both the Swedish Forest Agency and the Land and Environment Court. The family had appealed the ban to the highest instance.
