Indonesia's National Vigilance Directorate invites students to beach cleanup in Bali

Hundreds of students from Papua and Melanesia participated in discussions and a beach cleanup in Bali to demonstrate environmental care. The event was organized by the National Vigilance Directorate of the Ministry of Home Affairs on February 13-14, 2026, in Kuta. The initiative aligns with President-supported Gerakan Indonesia ASRI.

On Friday, February 13, 2026, the National Vigilance Directorate of the Ministry of Home Affairs held an informal discussion in Kuta, Bali, with the Soul of Melanesia community. The event involved students from Papua and Melanesia studying in Bali, covering their aspirations, experiences, and the role of youth in developing their home regions.

National Vigilance Director Aang Witarsa highlighted the importance of open dialogue between the government and students. "Through this dialogue, we hope to build strong synergy, sustainable communication, and positive collaboration between the government and student communities for a more advanced and inclusive future," Aang stated on February 16, 2026.

He added that students are expected to excel not only academically but also in social activities and leadership. "Papua and Melanesia students are expected not only to excel academically but also to be active in social activities, leadership, and self-capacity building as provisions for developing their home regions in the future," he continued.

The following day, Saturday, February 14, 2026, participants proceeded with the Bali Beach Clean Up at Kelan Beach and Kedonganan Beach. The activity was joined by government officials and locals, serving as a symbol of youth concern for the environment and fostering sustainable living habits.

The initiative supports the President's directives from the 2026 National Coordination Meeting of Central and Regional Governments in Sentul, emphasizing national involvement in environmental cleanliness under Gerakan Indonesia ASRI (Safe, Healthy, Clean, Beautiful). Additionally, the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) issued a fatwa declaring it haram to dispose of trash in rivers, lakes, and seas, in support of this movement.
