Iverk Show to host bitless riding class in August

The Iverk Show in Kilkenny will introduce a new bitless showing class on 22 August. The class offers a €350 prize pot and is sponsored by author Elaine Heney.

One of Ireland’s longest-established agricultural shows is adding the class to embrace a growing focus on horse welfare. Horses and ponies in class 23a may not be ridden in bits, mechanical hackamores or bridles relying primarily on poll pressure.

Permitted equipment includes rope halters, side pulls, bosals and mecates. Draw reins, standing martingales and tie-downs are not allowed. The class is open to horses aged five and over that stand 14hh and above, with riders aged 18 and over.

Elaine Heney said she is delighted to support the class. “Every horse deserves to be ridden in equipment that is comfortable and appropriate for them as an individual,” she said. Iverk Show’s Liam Kearns added that the new venture will make a great spectacle on show day.
