Ivo bans operations at Vemyra youth home

The Health and Social Care Inspectorate (Ivo) has decided on an immediate ban on continued operations at the SiS youth home Vemyra in Sollefteå. The decision is motivated by serious deficiencies, including violent incidents and shortcomings in staff competence. SiS plans to appeal.

On Friday, the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (Ivo) decided to prohibit continued operations at the SiS youth home Vemyra in Sollefteå. The ban takes effect immediately, and operations must be wound down by Wednesday, November 19. Currently, six youths reside at the home, according to SiS press secretary Jesper Lindberg.

The decision follows Ivo's inspection, which revealed several serious deficiencies. Ivo states the reasons as follows: repeated very serious violent incidents in the form of riots or riot-like events; significant shortcomings in staff competence; unsafe and unsuitable premises; and SiS has not acted forcefully enough or with the required urgency to address the serious issues.

"The supervision has shown that there is such a significant and imminent danger to the individuals' lives, health, and personal safety that a prohibition of continued operations is necessary," says Pia Karlsson, unit manager at Ivo, in a press release.

SiS intends to appeal the decision. "We will appeal Ivo's decision. We do not share Ivo's assessment of the situation at Vemyra right now. We will also request that the Administrative Court decide on inhibition, meaning that the decision to close the operations immediately will not apply for the time being. All to give us more time," Jesper Lindberg tells SVT.
