Jack Nicklaus criticizes PGA Tour schedule overhaul plans

Jack Nicklaus expressed opposition to the PGA Tour's proposed schedule compression during a press conference at the 2026 Memorial Tournament. The 86-year-old golf legend said he is not exactly in favor of changes that would pack the season into six months.

Nicklaus spoke at Muirfield Village on Tuesday ahead of the 50th Memorial Tournament. He said he plans to discuss the matter directly with PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp and outgoing commissioner Jay Monahan. The eight-time Memorial host argued that bunching major events too closely together would harm smaller tournaments. He cited this year's Cognizant Classic as an example of an event that could struggle to attract top fields. Nicklaus also noted that players need time to recharge between events. He said it is difficult for golfers to stay at their best when competing more than three weeks in a row. Beyond the schedule, Nicklaus said he wants to help preserve golf's traditions and charitable role rather than push new initiatives.
