John Mellencamp criticizes Trump Gulf rename during concert

John Mellencamp interrupted his performance in Holmdel, New Jersey, to mock President Donald Trump's renaming of the Gulf of Mexico. The rocker paused his 1983 hit "Pink Houses" on July 25 to call the change a "stupid f–king idea."

Mellencamp stopped mid-verse after singing about vacationing "down at the Gulf of Mexico." With his band still playing, he added sarcastically, "Wait a minute. The Gulf of Mexico? Is that right? It’s not the Gulf of America? What a stupid f–king idea."

The comment referred to an executive order Trump issued last year directing federal agencies to use the name Gulf of America. The original name dates to the 1550s.

The incident occurred during Mellencamp's Dancing Words Tour stop. The tour features his greatest hits and continues with a show scheduled for July 29 in Bristow, Virginia.
