Kazuki Higa becomes first Japanese to win Asian Tour order of merit

Kazuki Higa has made history as the first Japanese golfer to win the Asian Tour order of merit, securing the top spot after finishing seventh at the season-ending Saudi Open.

Kazuki Higa made history by becoming the first Japanese golfer to claim the Asian Tour order of merit, topping the standings after a seventh-place finish at the season-ending Saudi Open in Riyadh.

In Saturday's final round at Dirab Golf and Country Club, the 30-year-old Higa shot a four-under-par 68 to end the tournament at 16-under, seven strokes behind winner Bjorn Hellgren of Sweden. This performance edged out Zimbabwe's Scott Vincent for the overall lead.

"I am so, so happy. This is a great honour," Higa said. He added, "I just love playing golf. That's what it's about. I can't wait to get home to see my family."

The achievement earns Higa an exemption into the British Open. He began the year strongly with three top-10 finishes in the Philippines, India, and New Zealand. Back-to-back victories in September at the Shinhan Donghae Open in South Korea and the Yeangder TPC in Taiwan boosted his position significantly. A tie for second at the International Series Philippines in October then propelled him to the top of the order of merit.

"I have worked very hard for this," Higa reflected. "I felt that last year changed things, all the hard work started to pay off and it's amazing to see it all pay off this week."

Higa's ultra-consistent season highlights his dedication and sets a milestone for Japanese players on the Asian Tour.
