Kemet and TBEA sign MoU for Egypt's first inverter manufacturing plant

Mahmoud Esmat, Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Egyptian firm Kemet and China's TBEA at the end of his official visit to China. The deal covers renewable energy cooperation, technology transfer and localization for grid-connection systems, and the setup of Egypt's first inverter manufacturing plant. It supports the government's push to expand clean energy and localize electrical equipment production.

In a move to bolster Egyptian-Chinese ties in renewable energy, Ahmed El-Abd, chairperson of Kemet, and Zheng Yan, vice president of TBEA and general manager of its international business sector, signed the memorandum of understanding. The pact fits into Egypt's strategy to boost the share of clean energy in the national mix, emphasizing the localization of electrical equipment and energy storage battery manufacturing.

During the visit, Minister Esmat held discussions with Huang Hanjie, TBEA's chairperson, attended by Adel El-Hariri, board member for studies and planning at the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and representatives from the El-Abd Group. The talks centered on enhancing bilateral cooperation, speeding up manufacturing facility setups, technology transfer, and expanding training and capacity-building programs, aligning with Egypt's plans for deeper local production.

The meeting also covered the ministry's work to meet the national energy strategy's executive plan through domestic industry, amid major projects to bolster the power grid and advance interconnections with Europe. Huang Hanjie joined Esmat on a tour of TBEA's facilities, where the minister learned about the company's global operations, subsidiaries, integrated manufacturing, and advanced electrical equipment technologies.

Esmat emphasized that the electricity and renewable energy sector operates within an integrated framework for technology transfer and industrial localization, partnering with the private sector. He highlighted the state's full support for private sector involvement through effective partnerships, maximizing value from raw materials via downstream manufacturing, and broadening low-carbon renewable projects. The ministry is committed to expertise exchanges with technologically advanced nations, welcoming deeper ties with Chinese partners given the strong bilateral relations.
