Ludhiana adopts AI-driven intelligent traffic management system

Ludhiana has become the third city in Punjab to implement an AI-driven Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav inaugurated the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) on Tuesday. The system detects nine traffic violations and enhances surveillance across the city.

Punjab's Ludhiana became the third city after Jalandhar and Mohali to adopt the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), as announced by Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav during the inauguration of the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) on Tuesday.

The ITMS has been installed at 46 locations and can detect up to nine traffic violations, including red light violation, stop line violation, driving without helmet, pillion rider without helmet, triple riding, overspeeding, zebra crossing violation, wrong side driving, and wrong parking. Under the ICCC project, 1,700 high-resolution cameras are installed at 259 locations to strengthen surveillance. The centre integrates Traffic, PCR, Safe City, District Control Rooms, and Wireless units, reducing PCR response time from 15 minutes to 7-8 minutes.

Key features include AI-driven enforcement, a Green Corridor for organ transplant teams and emergency vehicles, and an advanced vehicle tracking system for real-time policing. Yadav described the ICCC as a major step towards preventive policing, stating, “The newly inaugurated ICCC integrates multiple units under one roof... which has significantly enhanced synergy and coordination in police working and reduced PCR response time from 15 minutes to just 7/8 minutes.”

Speaking to media, the DGP urged youths to avoid crimes lured by gangsters abroad, emphasizing Punjab Police's zero tolerance for organized crime. He noted that 80-90% of extortion and threat calls are fake and appealed for public reports. Yadav also shared a meal with over 550 police personnel at Police Lines.
