Noida police to form dedicated industrial cell after workers' protests

Noida police announced on Monday the creation of a dedicated industrial cell, to be headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (Industrial)-rank officer. The move follows a series of workers' protests earlier this month. Separately, a court granted two-day police remand to three accused.

Noida police announced on Monday the formation of a dedicated industrial cell to operate on an ad-hoc basis, headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (Industrial)-rank officer. Officials stated that it will include an Assistant Commissioner of Police (Industries), three Inspectors, and 25 personnel of various ranks.

The cell aims to ensure direct engagement with industries, labour unions, and workers, address grievances, enforce state and central laws, and enable quicker responses to industrial issues. The three commissionerate zones host around 15,000 registered industrial units, over two lakh companies, and nearly four lakh workers, an official said. A detailed proposal will be prepared by the Additional Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), Commissionerate Gautam Buddh Nagar, and sent within three days to the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police and Home department for approval.

The announcement follows a series of protests by workers earlier this month over demands for wage hikes, working hours, and better overtime pay.

On the same day, the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Virek Agrawal, Gautam Buddh Nagar, granted two-day police remand to three accused—Aditya Anand, Himanshu Thakur, and Satyam Verma—arrested for allegedly inciting violence during a protest on April 13. The custody runs from 9 am on April 29 to 6 pm on April 30, with instructions against harassment and allowing defence counsel to observe.

Police sought remand to recover items like Satyam Verma's laptop and CPU, and mobiles of the others, based on their disclosures. Defence counsel alleged torture of Aditya Anand on April 19 and lack of arrest grounds notification, but the court dismissed these, noting prior remand approval and informed grounds. Meanwhile, bail applications of around 15-20 other accused were rejected on Monday.
