Martin Compston channels James Bond for Red Eye performance

Line of Duty actor Martin Compston has revealed that James Bond inspired his action-oriented role in the second series of ITV thriller Red Eye. The star, who plays embassy security head Clay Brody, described the fight scenes as raw and brutal. The new season premieres on New Year's Day on ITV and STV.

Role Inspiration

Martin Compston, known for his role as DI Steve Arnott in BBC's Line of Duty, is taking on a high-stakes action part in Red Eye's second series. He explained that he drew inspiration from James Bond during the intense fight sequences, saying, "There’s something between action and cut, you can completely switch off and believe it in that moment. So you can be James Bond, you can be the ultimate spy." Compston also mentioned growing up as a fan of Harrison Ford, admiring his ability to perform incredible stunts.

Plot and Cast Details

In the series, Compston portrays Clay Brody, who teams up with DS Hana Li, played by Jing Lusi, to unravel a conspiracy. The characters have a tense history, as Brody previously undermined one of Li's former colleagues. Returning cast members include Lesley Sharp as MI5 head Madeline Delaney and Jemma Moore as journalist Jess Li, Hana's half-sister. The six-episode run promises gritty action, with Compston noting he sustained a black eye during sparring with director Kieron Hawkes.

Production and Release

Compston expressed enthusiasm for the physical demands, stating, "I live for all that, getting a bump on the head, getting up and getting on with it." He acknowledged that his everyday appearance might not scream action hero, adding, "People probably would look at me in real life and go, ‘He’s not ex-SAS’, you know?" The series builds on the success of the first season, positioning Compston as the lead. Viewers can catch the premiere on New Year's Day via ITV and STV, with Compston also set to reprise his Line of Duty role in the upcoming seventh season.
