Michael becomes highest-grossing music biopic in history

The Antoine Fuqua-directed Michael Jackson biopic Michael has earned $911.9 million worldwide. It now ranks as the highest-grossing music biopic of all time, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody from 2018.

Less than two months after its April 24 premiere, the film has set multiple box office records. These include the largest global opening weekend for a music biopic. It stands as the second-highest grossing film of 2026 so far, behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Michael is also the second-highest grossing biopic ever, behind Oppenheimer from 2025. Both Michael and Bohemian Rhapsody were produced by Graham King. The project received approval from the Jackson estate.

Originally planned for a 2025 release, the film faced delays after a settlement with Jordan Chandler required script changes. Rewriting and reshooting the third act, which now centers on preparations for the Bad Tour, added $10 million to $15 million in costs. Jaafar Jackson stars in the lead role.
