Michelle Wie West returns to lpga with emotional first round

Michelle Wie West stepped back into LPGA competition on Thursday after a three-year absence, battling nerves during a challenging round at the Mizuho Americas Open.

The 36-year-old former U.S. Women's Open champion opened with a par but followed with three bogeys, a triple bogey and a double bogey. She carded a 10-over 82 at Mountain Ridge Country Club in West Caldwell, New Jersey, her first competitive start since the 2023 U.S. Women's Open at Pebble Beach.

Michelle Wie West, the 2014 U.S. Women's Open champion, announced she will end her retirement to compete in the inaugural season of WTGL, a new women's team golf league. The league, in partnership with the LPGA, is set to launch in the winter of 2026-27 at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Wie West joins a roster featuring several top LPGA players.

Michelle Wie West is back in action this week at the Mizuho Americas Open, where she is serving as both tournament host and player. The 36-year-old has not competed in a professional event for nearly three years. She secured a sponsor exemption to gain competitive reps ahead of her final scheduled appearance later this summer.

South Korean Mi Hyang Lee holds a one-shot lead at 11 under par heading into the weekend at the Blue Bay LPGA in China. The veteran golfer posted a bogey-free 66 in windy conditions on Friday despite a lingering shoulder injury. Yu Liu of China trails closely at 10 under, while a field heavy with rookies adds unpredictability to the tournament.

Gary Woodland captured the 2026 Texas Children’s Houston Open on Sunday at Memorial Park, finishing at a tournament-record 21-under par for his first PGA Tour victory since the 2019 U.S. Open. The 41-year-old overcame a one-shot lead entering the final round to win by five strokes over Nicolai Højgaard. Woodland's win came amid his ongoing recovery from brain surgery and a recent PTSD diagnosis.

Rory McIlroy carded a 5-under-par 67 in the first round of the Masters Tournament to share the lead with Sam Burns. The defending champion displayed a relaxed approach despite hitting only five of 14 fairways, laughing off a wayward tee shot on the first hole with amateur Mason Howell. McIlroy attributed his strong play to the freedom gained from last year's victory.

Tiger Woods is set to compete in the TGL finals on Tuesday night after months away from the game. The 50-year-old will play for Jupiter Links against Los Angeles in Palm Beach, replacing Kevin Kisner alongside Max Homa and Tom Kim. The appearance raises hopes for a potential Masters comeback next month.
