Mitsubishi plant eyed as Japan hub for fighter jet

Japan, Britain and Italy are discussing roles in their joint fighter jet program. A Mitsubishi Heavy Industries factory in Aichi Prefecture is expected to serve as the Japanese center.

The three nations are discussing roles in the Global Combat Air Program. Britain will set up its center in Warton and Italy in Turin.

The Japanese center will be established at Mitsubishi Heavy's Komaki South plant in Aichi Prefecture by the end of this year. British engineers are already working on the design there.

The countries agreed to launch the program in 2022 for deployment in 2035. Canada was announced as the first observer this week. The aircraft will feature stealth technology and AI-driven data analysis.
