MSU-GenSan estimates P870 million damage from magnitude 7.8 quake

Mindanao State University-General Santos City suffered nearly P870 million in infrastructure damage from the June 8 earthquake. Chancellor Shidik Zed Abantas said the quake left the university back to square one after recent renovations. Academic activities will continue online for summer classes during repairs.

The damage affects academic buildings, administrative offices, and student facilities on the 162.4-hectare campus in Barangay Fatima, General Santos City. The university serves about 9,500 students across nine colleges and one institute. Abantas noted that nearly 90 percent of offices had been repaired and renovated before the quake.

The 47-year-old Y-Building was declared off-limits on June 9. University staff have moved documents and equipment to the Science and Technology Training Center. The four-story College of Medicine building remains structurally stable despite extensive architectural damage, according to initial engineering assessments.

Abantas said the university needs close to a billion pesos to return to normal operations. The administration is preparing a damage assessment report for the Commission on Higher Education, the Department of Budget and Management, and Malacañang. Commission on Higher Education Chairperson Shirley Agrupis is scheduled to visit the campus on June 13.
