DepEd launches project to protect schools from disasters

The Department of Education has introduced a new platform to help schools manage risks from natural disasters. Project LIGTAS+ provides detailed, school-specific data on hazards. It aims to reduce disruptions to learning and support affected communities.

The Department of Education launched Project LIGTAS+ yesterday in Manila. The initiative, formally known as the Learning Institution Geohazard Tracking and Assessment for Safety, uses geospatial analytics, satellite imagery, and historical data to create risk profiles for individual schools.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara said the platform offers real-time information through an interactive multi-hazard map. It includes flood monitoring via satellite data, earthquake assessments, volcanic tracking, and AI weather forecasts for up to 10 days ahead.

Angara noted that the system allows targeted decisions on class schedules rather than broad suspensions. This approach helps keep education on track and supports families who rely on stable school days for work.

The project aligns with efforts to use technology for safety, drawing on input from various hazard monitoring sources. Officials expect it to deliver more precise warnings and reduce the impact of disasters on learners.
