Myanmar’s Wei family faces trial over scam compounds in China

An alleged Myanmar crime boss and members of the Wei family syndicate went on trial this week in China over cross-border scam operations.

Prosecutors allege that from 2019 the syndicate used the Wei family’s influence in Myanmar’s Kokang region to run scam compounds. These operations defrauded victims in China of more than 24 billion yuan.

Two Chinese citizens are alleged to have been killed. Chen Dawei, described as Wei’s nephew, faces charges including involvement in the murders. Three other suspects, Liao Jingfang, Kang Min and Xiong Hengxing, were also charged with various offences.

The trial took place at Quanzhou Intermediate People’s Court in Fujian province. It ran from Tuesday to Friday before the court adjourned. No date has been set for verdicts.
