North Korea's Kim inspects Sinuiju greenhouse farm site

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inspected the construction site of a major greenhouse farm in the northwestern city of Sinuiju on Wednesday. The project on flood-damaged Wihwa Island is nearing completion at 97 percent. It is expected to be highlighted as a key achievement in his regional development policy.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited the construction site of the Sinuiju Combined Greenhouse Farm in the northwestern city of Sinuiju on Wednesday, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). The farm is being built on vast areas of Wihwa Island, an islet that suffered flood damage during last summer's floods. Since attending the groundbreaking ceremony in February, Kim has inspected the site almost every month starting from August.

The construction has reached 97 percent completion, KCNA reported. "He noted with great satisfaction that the islet, once called a barren land, has turned into a golden islet with great potential for leading the regional development and the improvement of the material and cultural life of the local people," the agency quoted Kim as saying.

North Korea is widely expected to spotlight the farm's completion as a major accomplishment of Kim's signature regional development policy at next month's party plenary meeting or a key party congress early next year. Last year, Kim unveiled a plan to build modern factories in 20 cities and counties annually over a 10-year period to enhance living conditions in regional areas. In recent months ahead of major party events, Kim has focused on visits to regional development sites, including a ceremony to launch a hospital on the outskirts of Pyongyang.
