Oromia government highlights culture and language achievements

Ethiopia's Ministry of Culture and Sports has highlighted successes by the Oromia regional government in developing diverse cultures and national knowledge. Key achievements include language policy implementation, traditional justice systems, and language digitization efforts.

Addis Ababa, April 3, 2026 - Ethiopia's Ministry of Culture and Sports issued a statement detailing the Oromia regional government's achievements in culture and language development over recent years. The ministry noted the preparation of a population census guide based on Proclamation 1116/2017, an Ethiopian language policy framework, and a linguistics study strategy.

In cultural heritage preservation, over 100 national knowledges were registered across 10 sectors. Seventy-nine traditional justice systems were profiled and positioned as alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. Studies were conducted to preserve practices hindering national development and unity.

Research on traditional reconciliation systems profiled 83 holidays, with comprehensive studies on five holidays. Eighty-seven cultural centers and institutes were capacitated to provide public services.

Language development efforts digitized 30 languages, including the five federal working languages. A guideline for translation job competencies was prepared, and linguistic works advanced for specific languages like Afar, Ongota, and others.
