Paris left seals unprecedented union deal for municipal elections

Paris's left-wing parties, excluding La France insoumise, have approved a historic agreement to field a united list from the first round of the March 2026 municipal elections, backing Socialist candidate Emmanuel Grégoire.

On the evening of Wednesday, December 17, 2025, Emmanuel Grégoire, the Socialist Party (PS) candidate, hailed a 'historic moment' after Paris's left-wing parties, excluding La France insoumise (LFI), endorsed an unprecedented agreement. For the first time since 1977, when the capital's mayor was first elected by universal suffrage, the Socialists, Greens, and Communists are uniting from the first round for a joint candidacy to the Paris Council.

Following months of negotiations, the party leaders reached common ground on Tuesday evening. Parisian Green members approved the deal by 73.7% in an online vote on Wednesday, which their leader David Belliard, a 2020 candidate, called a 'vote of responsibility.' Among the Communists, led by Ian Brossat, approval reached 77.9%.

The agreement aims to strengthen the left ahead of the 2026 municipal elections, promoting values of social and popular ecology. Belliard celebrated the union as a way to 'make Paris a city proud of its values.'

In his first major campaign rally on January 14, 2026, Emmanuel Grégoire, head of a left-wing union list in Paris, sharply criticized his rival Rachida Dati, accusing her of wanting to turn the capital into a « facho lab ». Earlier that day, outgoing mayor Anne Hidalgo defended her record without mentioning her former first deputy, stressing that Paris must remain a left-wing city.

Building on the historic December union of PS, Greens, and PCF, Emmanuel Grégoire has won the backing of former Mélenchon ally Danielle Simonnet for the Paris municipal elections. In exchange for two council seats, she aims to mobilize working-class voters in eastern Paris and counter La France insoumise's Sophia Chikirou.

Paris's municipal elections, scheduled for March 15 and 22, 2026, introduce a new voting system that breaks with tradition. Adopted in 2025 at the urging of Rachida Dati, the reform allows voters to cast separate ballots for their arrondissement and the central city hall. This change, amid the capital's other peculiarities, opens unexpected prospects in the race for City Hall.

In Lyon, deputies and senators are actively intervening in the March 2026 mayoral race, blurring lines between national mandates and local campaigning. Left-wing lawmakers are rallying to counter candidate Jean-Michel Aulas and bolster outgoing mayor Grégory Doucet's tarnished image. On the right, Senator Étienne Blanc is stirring discord.

In Marseille, tensions are rising between incumbent mayor Benoît Payan and La France insoumise candidate Sébastien Delogu ahead of the 2026 municipal elections. Delogu accuses Payan of pursuing a Macronist policy, while Payan blames his rival for choosing division. Meanwhile, Marine Le Pen is supporting RN candidate Franck Allisio, heightening the far-right threat.

In Le Havre, Edouard Philippe, mayor since 2010 and presidential candidate, will face a united left list in the March 2026 municipal elections. His opponents are banking on the weariness of his long tenure following comfortable re-elections in 2014 and 2020. The leader acknowledged that a local defeat would harm his national ambitions.

Socialist Ericka Bareigts, mayor of Saint-Denis in La Réunion, kicked off her municipal election campaign with a packed rally on January 31. Over 7,000 attendees cheered the candidate, who has forged a left-wing union despite local political divisions. In this overseas city of 156,000 residents, the largest in the French territories, she emerges as the frontrunner following the withdrawal of her main opponents.
