Phillies extend Cristopher Sánchez through 2032

The Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a six-year contract extension with pitcher Cristopher Sánchez, securing him from 2027 through 2032 with a club option for 2033. The deal guarantees $107 million, including $3.5 million in 2026. Sánchez, the team's Opening Day starter, spoke proudly of the commitment.

The Phillies announced the extension early Sunday morning. Sánchez, who signed a prior extension in June 2024 with three years remaining, now has long-term security. The 29-year-old left-hander has posted a 3.00 ERA over 81 starts from 2023 to 2025. In 2025, he made 32 starts with a 2.50 ERA and 8.0 WAR, finishing second in National League Cy Young voting behind Paul Skenes and earning MVP votes. He enters 2026 as one of the Cy Young favorites at +900 odds behind Skenes and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Traded from the Rays to the Phillies for Curtis Mead in 2019, Sánchez expressed gratitude through an interpreter: “I'm absolutely so proud of being here, and it shows the commitment that this thing happened. They rewarded my work... I appreciate the team doing this for me.” Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski explained the timing: “We kind of assumed years four and five were a no-brainer... we'd rather get this done now, while he's still at the age that makes sense for us.” This follows a five-year, $135 million extension for Jesús Luzardo. Philadelphia won its second straight NL East title in 2025 at 96-66 but fell to the Dodgers in the NLDS. Sánchez will anchor a rotation with Luzardo, Aaron Nola, Taijuan Walker, and rookie Andrew Painter.
