Continuing its 'Justice Mission 2025' exercises launched on December 29, the People's Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command held the second day of drills on December 30, featuring live-fire operations simulating maritime attacks and anti-air and anti-submarine missions north and south of Taiwan. The manoeuvres serve as a warning to 'independence forces' and external interference. Taiwan's defence ministry detected a record 130 PLA aircraft, 14 ships, and eight coastguard vessels near the island in the prior 24 hours.

The 'Justice Mission 2025' drills, which began on December 29 with far-seas patrols, aerial confrontations, and sea-air assaults east and southwest of Taiwan, entered their second day on December 30 with live-fire components.

Senior Captain Li Xi, spokesman for the PLA Eastern Theater Command, said ground forces conducted long-range firepower strikes that achieved intended results. Troops simulated attacks on maritime targets north and south of the island, alongside anti-air and anti-submarine operations. In northern and southwestern Taiwan Strait areas, destroyers, frigates, fighters, bombers, UAVs, and long-range rocket forces coordinated to hunt targets, strike ground positions, and perform live firing, testing integrated dominance. In central Taiwan Strait waters, fighters, bombers, UAVs, and rocket forces hit mobile ground targets to assess precision strikes.

Senior Colonel Shi Yi noted emphasis on long-distance raids and joint precision strikes.

Taiwan’s defence ministry reported the highest single-day detections this year: about 130 aircraft, 14 ships, and eight 'official' vessels—likely coastguard—up to 6am Tuesday, per South China Morning Post data.

Following the December 29 announcement of 'Justice Mission 2025,' the PLA Eastern Theater Command has launched joint drills around Taiwan, testing multi-service combat capabilities in sea-air patrols, blockades, and deterrence. Taiwan has deployed forces, missile systems, and remains on high alert, criticizing the exercises as a challenge to norms.

The People's Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command wrapped up its two-day 'Justice Mission 2025' live-fire exercise on Dec. 30, encircling swathes of Taiwan in its largest drill to date. Building on the second day's operations reported previously, the exercise followed the US approval of a record $11.1 billion weapons package for Taiwan and featured army, navy, air force, and rocket force units with stealth fighters, destroyers, and missile systems like the PHL-16. Taiwan detected 31 warships, 16 coastguard vessels overall, and 207 PLA aircraft sorties, 125 crossing the Taiwan Strait median line.

China's military has announced large-scale exercises around Taiwan codenamed 'Justice Mission 2025,' set for Tuesday. The drills will emphasize port blockades and deterrence against external forces, following Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's comments on potential intervention and recent U.S. arms sales to the island.

A CCTV report has revealed rare footage from a People's Liberation Army wargaming event in central China, simulating battles near Mexico, Cuba and Taiwan. The footage shows red and blue opposing units maneuvering in these areas, with the red side typically representing the Chinese military.

China's Liaoning aircraft carrier and Chinese-Russian bombers approached Japan's Pacific coasts off Shikoku and the Kii Peninsula in December before turning back together, coinciding with US-Japan joint drills and potentially testing allied readiness, Defense Ministry sources told Jiji Press.

A mainland Chinese military magazine has warned of the threat posed by Taiwan's asymmetric warfare plan and called for a multipronged response. The article discusses how the People's Liberation Army could use a decapitation strike to counter Taiwan's 'porcupine' strategy, which aims to turn the island into an impregnable fortress using small, low-cost weapons.

Earlier this month, Japanese fighter jets flew close to a People's Liberation Army aircraft carrier group during military exercises near Japan, sparking mutual accusations of provocation. Beijing claimed the Japanese aircraft disrupted the drills, while Tokyo accused China of instigating the incident. The episode has once again spotlighted China's mainstay carrier-based fighter, the J-15, in service for over a decade and often patrolling hotspots like the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait.
