China test-fires missile from nuclear submarine into Pacific

China's navy launched a missile from a nuclear submarine into international Pacific waters on Monday, prompting concerns from Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

China's official Xinhua news agency said a nuclear submarine of the People's Liberation Army Navy launched the missile carrying a dummy warhead at 12:01 p.m. The missile landed in designated waters. The agency described the launch as a routine part of annual military training and said it was not directed against any specific country.

Japan's government said it received prior notification and urged China to reconsider. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong called the test destabilizing, while New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters said his country was deeply concerned.

China last tested an intercontinental ballistic missile in 2024. Japanese authorities said the missile landed outside Japan's exclusive economic zone.
