Rare 1.3kg gold belt up for auction in Sweden

A 1.3kg gold belt from 1965 is up for sale at Swedish auction house Auctionet. The highest bid stands at 1.15 million kronor, with an expected final bid of 1.3 million kronor. Auction officials call it extremely rare.

A belt made of 18-karat gold and decorated with two diamonds has been consigned to Auctionet by an anonymous private individual. Produced by Bobs Guldsmedja in 1965, the item weighs over 1,300 grams and is in fine condition despite two missing diamonds and some dents. Due to theft risk, it is stored off-site and not shown to bidders.

Andreas Siesing, curator at Auctionet, says he has never handled anything like it before. “It is extremely rare. It is not something one wears every day,” he states. He describes the belt as “enormously pompous” and “a substantial piece to have around the waist.”

Buyers are likely gold dealers valuing it at current gold prices rather than for design. “It is the gold one pays for. We are talking almost a decorative gold bar here,” Siesing notes. Gold prices have risen in recent years, and the final bid could reach up to 1.5 million kronor if prices surge further.

Siesing believes gold will rise in value long-term, despite fluctuations tied to the global economy. The auction house reports heightened interest in gold and silver items currently.
