Religious leaders urge forgiveness and charity during Lent

Religious leaders from Ethiopia's Orthodox and Catholic churches have urged believers to increase forgiveness and charity as Great Lent begins. They cite Jesus Christ's fasting as an example, emphasizing sharing with others in love and humility. This period calls for internal change and prayers for national peace.

In Addis Ababa, on Ketit 10, 2018 (Fana Media), Great Lent has commenced for believers in Ethiopia's Orthodox Tewahedo Church and Catholic Church. Religious leaders have advised that this fasting period requires heightened forgiveness and acts of charity. They highlight the spiritual significance of the fast in fostering unity and peace.

Melake Selam Qes Dawiit Yared, head of the Orthodox Church's Evangelism and Missionary Department, described the fast as an example set by Jesus Christ for all humanity. "Through his fasting, his followers should observe it while safeguarding their religious system," he stated. He further stressed the importance of sharing with others through love and humility.

From the Catholic Church, Aba Abraham Ge/Maryam, Secretary General and Chief of Missionary Work, explained that the Lent offers an opportunity to present oneself as a sacrifice via prayer, fasting, and good deeds. "Just as Jesus Christ extended forgiveness and mercy to all who wrong him, we too should seek forgiveness from our neighbors and do good," he said. He noted that this season demands internal transformation rather than external observances, promoting communal living, positive thoughts toward others, and a focus on social responsibility over individualism.

Ultimately, the leaders encouraged followers to engage in forgiveness, mercy, sharing, and prayers for the country's peace during this time.
