Royals' Tyler Tolbert ties MLB record with 12 straight hits

Kansas City Royals infielder Tyler Tolbert tied the major league record by recording a hit in 12 consecutive plate appearances. The achievement came during a series against the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies.

Tolbert, a career .247 hitter entering the streak, began his run on Saturday with an infield single against the Phillies. He followed with another single on Sunday's continuation and went 5 for 5 on Monday, including his first career home run.

On Tuesday in New York, Tolbert hit a two-run homer in the second inning, then added three more singles, including an infield single in the seventh that tied the record. He flew out in the ninth, ending the streak at 12.

The mark matches the plate-appearance record previously held by Johnny Kling in 1902 and Walt Dropo in 1952. Tolbert also became only the third player in MLB history with back-to-back five-hit games.
