Sleater-Kinney and Liz Phair announce co-headlining Flannel and the Fury tour

Sleater-Kinney and Liz Phair will co-headline a U.S. tour dubbed Flannel and the Fury, starting in September. The run celebrates 1990s alt-rock culture and female-fronted bands from the Riot Grrrl scene. This marks the first time the two acts share a stage.

Liz Phair described the tour in a press release as a nod to “the female-fronted bands who staked their claim to center stage in a male-dominated music industry.” She noted that both she and Sleater-Kinney “cut our teeth in the early Riot Grrrl scene,” adding, “It’s been a dream of mine ever since to bring our music and our fans together for one night of reckless hope and musical splendor. We’ll see you there!” The announcement came on April 28, as first reported by Pitchfork. Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney praised Phair, saying, “For those of us who listened to Exile in Guyville on repeat in 1993, Liz Phair has always been a leader and a truth-sayer for the female experience. She’s a legend and a stone cold classic; what a thrill to share the stage with one of our biggest inspirations—we can’t wait to tear it up with her. See you soon!” The tour itinerary includes stops at El Cajon’s The Magnolia on September 6, Los Angeles’ The Greek Theatre on September 8, Chicago’s The Salt Shed Outdoors on September 17, Brooklyn’s BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! on September 19, and Boston’s MGM Music Hall at Fenway on September 21. Phair has four additional solo shows during the period in St. Paul, Minnesota; Portland, Maine; Albany, New York; and at Maryland’s Oceans Calling Festival.
