Sony releases PlayStation Portal update with 1080p high quality mode

Sony has rolled out a new firmware update for the PlayStation Portal, introducing a 1080p High Quality mode and refinements to cloud streaming. The update aims to provide higher visual fidelity and smoother interactions. Takuro Fushimi, senior manager of product management at Sony, highlighted ongoing improvements to performance and usability.

The PlayStation Portal received a significant update on March 17, 2026, building on enhancements from the previous year that made it the most widely used device for PlayStation 5 Remote Play, according to Takuro Fushimi. This surpasses usage on mobile PC, PS5, and PS4 devices. The new patch introduces a 1080p High Quality mode for Remote Play and Cloud Streaming, allowing higher bitrate streaming for improved visual fidelity when network conditions support it. Users can enable it via the Quick Menu under Max Resolution and restart the session to apply changes compared to the default 1080p Standard mode. Sony describes this as an 'evolution' delivering smoother interactions and a more seamless experience overall. Cloud streaming usability has been refined with several features: an improved Product Detail Page for game bundles, letting users select specific titles to stream; on-screen notifications for game invites during supported titles; enhanced Trophy notifications showing the trophy name, image, and special animation for Platinum trophies; and a smoother search interface with immediate on-screen keyboard access. Onboarding is also easier, with QR code scanning for quick account creation and sign-in. Fushimi stated: 'As more players discover new ways to play on PS Portal, we remain committed to continuously refining performance and usability. Today, we’re pleased to share some new features and refinements for our PS Portal users.' Sony reported a 162% year-over-year increase in cloud streaming monthly users, with over 50% of Portal users subscribing to PlayStation Plus Premium.
