Steinbrück suggests new strategy in dealing with the AfD

Former Federal Finance Minister Peer Steinbrück proposes defining red lines for the AfD. He considers the firewall still necessary but is considering a long-term change in the party.

Peer Steinbrück spoke in the podcast “Ronzheimer” hosted by Bild deputy Paul Ronzheimer about how to deal with the AfD. The Social Democrat described the firewall as necessary for the foreseeable future.

At the same time Steinbrück raised the question of how a shift of the AfD toward a right-conservative position could be achieved. He suggested drawing clear red lines in various policy areas.

Steinbrück referred to ideas from historian Andreas Rödder. Last year Rödder had proposed in Stern a conditioned willingness to talk if the AfD rejects right-wing extremist positions.
