Sweden may see a record number of diamond weddings this year as couples mark 60 years of marriage. The trend stems from unusually high marriage rates and young ages in 1966. Statistics Sweden says the total could be the highest ever.
Statistics Sweden reports that 1966 saw the second-highest number of marriages since World War II. The average age at first marriage was 25.9 years for men and 23.3 years for women.
Demographer Filip Dabergott notes that 22,700 people could look forward to a 60-year marriage in 2025. The figure was 8,200 in 2000.
Later marriage trends have reduced the share of young couples. In 1966, 72.7 percent of women and 50.7 percent of men were under 25 at the time of marriage.
