Sweden limits first citizenship test to 1,000 applicants

The first society knowledge test for Swedish citizenship will be held on August 15 in Stockholm but limited to 1,000 people. The regulation was published today as requirements tighten this summer.

The test location and number are restricted due to limited time after the legislation came into place. Susanne Wadsborn Taube, deputy director general at the Swedish Council for Higher Education, said UHR wants to avoid mistakes and ensure legal security.

Those selected pay for their own travel and accommodation to Stockholm but skip the 2,000 kronor test fee. More than 34,000 applicants are estimated to need the test as they lack grades or certificates.

A Swedish language test will be introduced from October 1, 2027. Over 100,000 people await citizenship decisions. UHR manages the tests while the Migration Agency handles applications.
