Swedish goaltender Hugo Laring joins Nanaimo Clippers

Hugo Laring is leaving Frölunda HC after one season to play in Canada. The 20-year-old goaltender has signed with the Nanaimo Clippers of the British Columbia Hockey League.

Laring signed a two-year contract with Frölunda last spring but will now depart for the BCHL. The move comes after he appeared in 23 games with the club's J20 team last season.

He also played two matches for Vimmerby HC in the Hockeyallsvenskan and one game for Kungälv in Hockeyettan. Laring, whose mother club is Hanhals IF, has represented Sweden at the junior international level.

Colin Birkas, head coach and general manager of the Nanaimo Clippers, said Laring joins from one of the world's best development programs. Birkas described him as a smart goaltender who reads the play well and challenges shooters.

The BCHL operates outside the Canadian Hockey League structure that includes the OHL, WHL and QMJHL.
