The Rookie shifts to Monday nights on ABC from January 26

ABC's long-running cop drama The Rookie is relocating from its Tuesday slot to Mondays at 10 p.m. starting January 26, following American Idol's return. This move allows space for the new series RJ Decker on Tuesdays. The eighth season will air without interruptions after its third episode.

The Rookie, starring Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, has been a fixture on ABC's Tuesday nights for much of its seven-plus seasons. However, the network announced that beginning January 26, the show will air on Mondays at 10 p.m., a slot previously occupied by Fillion's earlier series Castle.

The transition comes after Episode 3 broadcasts on its original Tuesday, January 20. From Episode 4 through the season's 18th installment, The Rookie will run uninterrupted on Mondays, with no reruns in between. This straight-to-air approach aims to maintain momentum for the veteran procedural.

The schedule change accommodates the debut of freshman drama RJ Decker, an adaptation of Carl Hiaasen's works featuring Scott Speedman from Grey's Anatomy and Jaina Lee Ortiz from Station 19. RJ Decker will premiere on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. starting March 3, slotted after episodes of Will Trent and High Potential.

On its new night, The Rookie will compete with NBC's Brilliant Minds and CBS's CIA, the latter expanding the FBI universe and set to premiere February 23.

American Idol returns earlier on Mondays for its 24th season, leading into The Rookie. This reshuffling reflects ABC's efforts to balance established hits with new programming in the competitive primetime landscape.
