Tigers prospect Kevin McGonigle predicted for AL rookie of the year

Detroit Tigers' top prospect Kevin McGonigle has been tipped by MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince as a strong candidate for American League Rookie of the Year in 2026. The infielder impressed in the minors last year with standout hitting stats and multiple awards. His potential MLB debut could come sooner if opportunities arise on the big-league roster.

The Detroit Tigers boast one of Major League Baseball's strongest farm systems, with President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris reluctant to trade away key prospects unless essential. Among them, shortstop Kevin McGonigle stands out as the second-ranked prospect in MLB and a prime example of the club's vision for the future. He is unlikely to be moved and could debut in the majors as early as 2026.

In a recent prediction, MLB.com writer Anthony Castrovince selected McGonigle for AL Rookie of the Year honors. "Instead, I’ll go with the guy who has maybe the best hit tools in the Minors right now," Castrovince wrote. "McGonigle’s approach and bat speed are impressive, and he slashed .305/.408/.583 with 46 strikeouts against 59 walks in 88 games across three levels in 2025. He might not crack the Tigers’ Opening Day squad at shortstop like some fans will hope, but I think there will be ample opportunity for him in 2026."

McGonigle's path to the majors may depend on the performance of current Tigers players. For instance, if outfielder Parker Meadows continues to struggle, the team could shift Javier Baez back to center field—where he excelled last season—to open shortstop for McGonigle. However, evaluators note that McGonigle's defense might not sustain him at shortstop long-term, potentially moving him to second base once the Tigers part ways with Gleyber Torres.

In 2025, McGonigle earned numerous accolades, including Midwest League player of the week, player of the month, and prospect of the year. He was also named to the All-MiLB Prospect First Team, a Baseball America Minor League All-Star, and secured multiple Arizona Fall League honors: player of the week twice, rising star, and most valuable player.

These achievements have positioned McGonigle as a cornerstone for the Tigers' rebuilding efforts, with fans anticipating his arrival at Comerica Park.
