Trafikverket appeals for lower speeds on Vasaloppsvägen

Trafikverket urges road users to keep to the speed limit on Vasaloppsvägen between Fiskarheden and Oxberg during the summer. Work continues despite the holiday season and many drivers exceed the limits.

Road work on Vasaloppsvägen continues during parts of the summer. The road remains open to traffic while the final major works are carried out to make the stretch safer and more passable.

Trafikverket has carried out 6000 speed measurements in which 3700 cars drove too fast. The highest recorded speed was 96 kilometres per hour on a section signed for 30 kilometres per hour.

– The risk is that one of our colleagues will not get home, says Peter Byström, responsible for traffic safety during the work. Construction manager Claes Engvall adds that those working on the road want to get home safely every day.

Work along the entire stretch is scheduled to be completed by the end of September this year.

Thousands are expected to travel to Uppsala for Walpurgis Night celebrations, prompting extra guards at the central station to prevent track trespassing. Uppsala Central had the most incidents in Sweden last year with 46 cases and 136 delay hours. Fine weather and distribution of 100,000 water bottles are also planned.

Trafikverket will close Vasaloppsvägen between Oxberg and Evertsberg for nearly the entire month of May to replace damaged culverts. Traffic will be rerouted via Älvdalen. The closure forms part of the final phase in upgrading the road.

Stockholm Chamber of Commerce has sharply criticized Trafikverket in a new report on Sweden's infrastructure development. The report highlights skyrocketing costs, slow bureaucracy, and reduced efficiency. Trafikverket, headquartered in Borlänge, dismisses the criticism as based on misunderstandings.

On Tuesday, spectators gathered at Viktoriaslussen in Stockholm to watch the first section of a new cycle and pedestrian bridge being towed into Söderström. The 220-metre-long bridge, built in Poland, has been divided into six sections due to transport constraints. Installation work is now starting and is expected to take six weeks.
