Tributes paid to showjumping course designer Bob Ellis

Tributes have been paid to Bob Ellis, the legendary showjumping course designer who died aged 79 after a short illness. Ellis designed the tracks for the London 2012 Olympic Games and created courses at major events worldwide over a career spanning more than four decades.

Ellis began designing courses in his early 20s and went on to work at shows across the UK, including Hickstead, Windsor and the London International Horse Show. He also built tracks for international championships in 33 countries. His work at the 2012 Olympics was described as a crowning achievement. Ellis recalled the British team gold as a highlight, saying it brought him to tears. Tributes came from organisations including Hickstead, British Showjumping and Horse of the Year Show. They praised his creativity, mentorship of younger designers and passion for the sport. Ellis received several awards, including the Liz Dudden Trophy in 2012 and the Horse & Hound Lifetime Achievement Award.
