US envoy MaryKay Carlson bids farewell to Marcos

Outgoing US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson bid farewell to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. yesterday, marking the end of her tour of duty in the Philippines. In an Instagram post, Marcos thanked her for her service and contributions to strengthening the bilateral alliance. He also conferred on her the Order of Sikatuna for her role in fostering ties between the two nations.

In Malacañang, Carlson's farewell call on Marcos provided an opportunity to acknowledge the long-standing tradition of cooperation between the Philippines and the United States. She began her tenure on July 22, 2022, when she presented her credentials to the president. Since then, she has played a key role in bolstering diplomatic ties established in 1946 and reinforced by the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty. This pact enables both nations to maintain and develop their defensive capabilities, either separately or jointly, against armed attacks.

In his Instagram post, Marcos stated: “As she concludes her tenure, we wish her every success and look forward to continuing our close cooperation with the United States.” This reflects ongoing commitment to their shared regional interests. The Order of Sikatuna, awarded to Carlson, recognizes foreign diplomats who have provided exceptional service in developing relations with the Philippines. The meeting underscores the enduring partnership amid challenges in the Indo-Pacific, offering optimism for future collaboration.
