According to MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan, the Yankees are giving serious thought to acquiring Bo Bichette from the Toronto Blue Jays. "A move bringing Bichette to the Bronx would rank among the more surprising developments of the offseason," Harrigan wrote in a January 13, 2026, analysis, noting it could reshape both the Yankees' roster and the AL East landscape.
The AL East was highly competitive in 2025, with the Yankees and Blue Jays each winning 94 games, the Red Sox tallying 89, and three teams advancing to the playoffs. The Orioles, coming off a last-place finish, have made several marquee additions, while Toronto remains aggressive following a narrow World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Bichette, who has spent his entire career with the Blue Jays, joining New York would add intrigue, especially as Toronto eyes free-agent outfielder Kyle Tucker—potentially accelerating that pursuit if Bichette departs.
Infield fit poses challenges: Anthony Volpe is slated to miss Opening Day due to left shoulder surgery, creating a short-term shortstop opening, but no long-term spot exists. This scenario raises questions about second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., entering his walk year on a one-year, $10.2 million deal. New York Post's Jon Heyman reported on January 8 that the Yankees might trade Chisholm, a free agent after 2026, to accommodate Bichette at second base.
