Arizona man accused of strangling girlfriend while her mother watched via FaceTime

Jesus Arturo Guerrero-Martinez faces charges after allegedly strangling his girlfriend twice during a confrontation in Tucson, including once while her mother observed via FaceTime. The 30-year-old was arrested on April 30 and is detained on $150,000 bond. Police detailed the incident in a court complaint.

Jesus Arturo Guerrero-Martinez, 30, stands accused of two counts of domestic violence-aggravated assault, one count of kidnapping, and one count of aggravated assault with a simulated weapon, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department. Tucson Police Department officers arrested him on April 30, and he appeared in court that night. He remains in Pima County Adult Detention Center on $150,000 bond, jail records show. The confrontation began when Guerrero-Martinez accused his girlfriend of trying to break his laptop, which she had taken to watch a movie but returned to avoid a fight, per the interim complaint obtained by local affiliates KOLD and KVOA. He allegedly grabbed her by the throat, dragged her to the bedroom, threw her on the bed, and strangled her using his hands and forearm. During the second strangulation, the woman called her mother on FaceTime; the mother witnessed the assault on the screen and drove to the apartment, police said. The girlfriend also reported multiple face strikes and that Guerrero-Martinez threatened her with what appeared to be a gun—a metal flashlight, as later confirmed by a search warrant. Guerrero-Martinez denied the incident to investigators. In Thursday's court hearing, a prosecutor stated the defendant 'has previously tried to kill the victim, has previously threatened to kill the victim, and has previously strangled the victim.' His attorney spoke on his behalf while he remained silent.
