Fernando Alonso says 2026 F1 rules need no driver talent

Fernando Alonso has criticised the 2026 Formula 1 regulations, claiming they reduce the need for driver skill during overtakes.

The two-time champion made the comments after the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. He pointed to the new power unit rules that split power roughly evenly between electric and internal combustion sources.

Alonso said the resulting 'yo-yo' racing allows drivers to pass simply by pressing a button when they have more battery energy available. "You don't need to outbrake anyone, you don't need to overtake on the outside, you don't need to take any risk," he stated.

The Aston Martin driver finished outside the points at Silverstone and noted similar challenges are expected at next week's Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps due to its high-speed layout and long straights. He added that the cars have significantly less power than last year when energy deployment is limited.
