A 27-year-old police officer in Illinois faces first-degree murder charges in the death of her 29-year-old roommate. Authorities say the shooting occurred at their shared home in March.
Caitlynn J. Girkin was arrested and booked into the Tazewell County Jail on Tuesday. She worked as an officer with the Creve Coeur Police Department at the time of the incident on the 500 block of Roosevelt Road in Creve Coeur, Illinois.
Girkin called 911 around 2:15 a.m. on March 10 and reported that a man had shot himself with her personal gun. Responding officers found Adolfo Cazares in the hallway with injuries to his nose, mouth, and chest.
During the investigation, Girkin's account changed several times, according to court records. She ultimately told investigators that Cazares came to her room after she sent him Snapchat photos of herself holding a gun to her head.
Girkin is scheduled to return to court on Thursday. Cazares' obituary described him as someone who enjoyed playing games with friends and family.
